Managing curly hair while raising kids can feel overwhelming. Most moms simply don’t have the time for complicated routines, multiple styling products, or long wash days. The reality is that curly hair care needs to be simple, consistent, and effective.
Over time, I’ve simplified my routine to a few steps that keep my curls hydrated, my scalp clean, and my hair easy to manage. This routine works well for me as a busy mom because it’s quick, affordable, and repeatable.
Below is the exact curly hair routine that works best for my hair.
Daily Washing Works Best for My Hair
There is a lot of advice online suggesting that people with curly hair should only wash their hair once a week to “train” their scalp.
I tried that approach and it completely ruined my hair.
My scalp became irritated, my curls lost definition, and product buildup made my hair feel heavy. For my hair type, washing my hair every day works best. It keeps my scalp clean, prevents buildup, and helps my curls stay fresh.
Every hair type is different. What matters most is finding the routine that actually works for your scalp and curls.
My Favorite Curly Hair Products
The main products I use come from the Dove Amino Curl Repair line.
This line is affordable, easy to find, and designed specifically for curly hair. I usually use three products from this line:
- Curl shampoo
- Curl conditioner
- Curl defining cream
These products focus on repairing damage and maintaining curl hydration, which makes them perfect for a simple daily routine.
My Favorite Hair Oil
Sometimes the next day, if my hair needs extra shine or moisture, I add a small amount of Moroccanoil Treatment Oil, which is made with Argan Oil.
It is definitely on the pricier side, but for me it works extremely well. Because of that, it’s one product I don’t plan to replace. A tiny amount helps smooth frizz and brings curls back to life.
I Don’t Oil My Scalp
Another thing that may be different from many curly routines is that I don’t oil my scalp.
I used to do scalp oiling because I believed it would help with hair growth and dryness. Instead, it made my scalp feel greasy and caused more buildup.
Now I focus on keeping my scalp clean and balanced through regular washing, which has worked much better for my hair.
Simple Styling for Busy Mornings
My styling routine is intentionally very simple.
After washing my hair:
- Apply curl cream while hair is damp
- Scrunch curls gently
- Let hair air dry
I don’t spend time diffusing or using multiple styling products. The goal is soft, defined curls without a complicated process.
For busy moms, a routine needs to be something you can realistically repeat every day.
Consistency Is More Important Than Complicated Routines
Curly hair doesn’t need ten products or an hour of styling. What it really needs is hydration, scalp care, and consistent maintenance.
For me, daily washing, a simple product line, and occasional oil for shine have made the biggest difference in my hair health.
If you’re trying to simplify your curly hair routine, focus on what actually works for your hair, not what trends say you should do.
Final Thoughts
Curly hair care should fit into your life, not make it more stressful. A routine that is simple, quick, and realistic will always work better than an overly complicated one.
