Dry Skin Routine for Sensitive Skin & Eczema
Dry, sensitive skin can feel like a constant battle—tightness, flaking, irritation, and eczema flare-ups that seem to come out of nowhere. After trying different methods, I simplified everything and focused on consistency, gentle products, and protecting my skin barrier.
This routine is realistic, affordable, and designed for everyday life—especially if you’re busy and don’t have time for complicated skincare.
Why Dry Skin Needs a Simple Routine
When you have dry or eczema-prone skin, less is often more. Over-exfoliating, using fragranced products, or taking hot showers can weaken your skin barrier and make symptoms worse.
The goal is simple:
- Cleanse without stripping
- Moisturize consistently
- Avoid triggers
My Daily Night Shower Routine
I shower every night before bed to remove buildup from the day and start with clean skin.
1. Gentle Cleansing Only
I use Dove Sensitive Skin for both my face and body. It’s fragrance-free and doesn’t leave my skin feeling tight or dry.
I completely avoid:
- Physical scrubs
- Loofahs
- Harsh exfoliating tools
These can cause micro-irritation and worsen dryness over time.
2. Skip the Hot Water
Hot showers might feel relaxing, but they strip natural oils from your skin.
I keep my showers warm—not hot—to prevent triggering my eczema. This small change alone makes a noticeable difference.
3. Pat Dry, Don’t Rub
After showering, I gently pat my skin dry with a towel instead of rubbing. This helps reduce irritation and keeps some moisture on the skin before applying lotion.
My Moisturizing Routine (This Is Key)
Consistency here is what transformed my skin.
3x Per Week: Gentle Chemical Exfoliation
I use AmLactin 15% Lactic Acid Lotion on my body three times a week.
- Helps remove dead skin buildup
- Smooths rough texture
- Improves overall hydration
Because it’s a chemical exfoliant, it works without the harshness of physical scrubs.
Other Days: Deep Hydration
On the remaining days, I use Cetaphil Body Cream to keep my skin moisturized and calm.
This keeps my routine balanced—treating dryness without overdoing exfoliation.
Why I Avoid Fragrance Completely
Fragrance is one of the biggest triggers for sensitive skin.
- My skin reacts badly to it
- My youngest is allergic to perfumes
So I stick to fragrance-free products daily. If I’m going out, I’ll use a light body spray—but never as part of my core routine.
Key Tips for Managing Dry Skin
If you’re dealing with dry or eczema-prone skin, focus on these basics:
- Use gentle, fragrance-free cleansers
- Avoid physical exfoliation
- Moisturize daily (consistency matters more than anything)
- Limit hot water exposure
- Keep your routine simple and repeatable

You don’t need a complicated routine to improve dry skin. What actually works is being consistent with the right products and avoiding common irritants.
