There is just something about a summer tan that makes you feel healthy, refreshed, and like you just got back from vacation. While we can’t keep summer forever, we can definitely help our tan stick around a little longer.

The good news? You don’t need an expensive routine or dozens of products. A few simple habits can make a huge difference in keeping your skin glowing long after beach season ends.

1. Exfoliate Twice a Week

This might sound surprising, but gentle exfoliation actually helps your tan last longer.

When dead skin builds up, your tan can start to look uneven or patchy. Using a gentle exfoliating body wash or an exfoliating lotion twice a week removes those dry flakes while keeping your skin smooth and fresh.

The key is gentle exfoliation—not harsh scrubs that can strip your skin.

2. Moisturize After Every Shower

If I could only give one piece of advice, this would be it.

Hydrated skin holds onto a tan much better than dry skin. After every shower, apply a lightweight moisturizer while your skin is still slightly damp. This helps lock in moisture and keeps your skin looking soft, healthy, and glowing.

Personally, I love lightweight lotions. I’m not a huge fan of body oils because they tend to leave my skin feeling greasy, especially during the warmer months.

3. Use a Sunless Tanner Once a Week

One of my favorite tricks is using a gradual or sunless tanning lotion once a week.

It gives your skin a little boost of color without having to spend extra time in the sun. Instead of letting your tan completely fade, you’re simply maintaining that healthy summer glow.

Think of it as a quick touch-up instead of starting over.

4. Never Skip SPF at the Beach

This is probably my biggest tanning tip.

A tan should never come at the expense of your skin’s health. Wearing sunscreen doesn’t stop you from tanning—it simply helps protect your skin from burning and long-term sun damage.

A beautiful tan looks much better when your skin stays healthy.

Choose an SPF that feels lightweight and comfortable so you’ll actually want to reapply it throughout the day.

5. Keep Your Showers Warm, Not Hot

Hot water can dry out your skin much faster, which can cause your tan to fade more quickly.

Try keeping showers warm instead of steaming hot, and gently pat your skin dry with a towel instead of rubbing.

Your skin will thank you.

6. Stay Hydrated

Beautiful skin starts from the inside.

Drinking enough water throughout the day helps keep your skin hydrated, which can help your tan look fresher and your skin healthier overall.

It’s one of the easiest beauty tips that actually works.

7. Don’t Forget Your Hands, Feet, and Elbows

These areas tend to dry out first.

Giving them a little extra moisturizer helps keep your tan looking even from head to toe.

Keep It Simple

You don’t need a complicated skincare routine to enjoy your summer glow a little longer.

My simple routine looks like this:

  • Exfoliate twice a week.
  • Moisturize after every shower.
  • Apply a gradual tanning lotion once a week.
  • Wear SPF every time I’m at the beach.
  • Stay hydrated and avoid overly hot showers.

That’s it!
